Convert To EzyDog Australia

EzyDog Convert Harness 6From my earliest days I have been an adventure dog, hiking and bushwalking through the breathtaking back country of the majestic Blue Mountains. When you get off the beaten track its important that you have the right gear, and by that I mean purpose built canine adventure and performance gear. Its also important to look good too, which is why I use EzyDog.

EzyDog recently released the Convert Harness and I must say I was converted when I first set eyes on it. Its sleek profile and styling will have you stepping out in confidence and turning heads, but it’s the functionality and quality that really sets it apart. Designed to meet the needs of the most adventurous, from small breeds to large powerful breeds, the Harness is fitted with a soft cotton lining on the load bearing surfaces to ensure maximum comfort for us doggies, I don’t even notice that I am wearing it.

The ingenious magnetic soft touch handle stays low for safety on those off trail walks, and it’s a great security feature should we need to be secured by our owners. Anti roll design together with heavy duty webbing and stainless steel fittings, the Convert is feature packed. There is even an LED attachment for the Orbiloc Safety Light. But it’s the multifunctional design that takes it to the next level.

I was so excited to receive the “soon to be released” Saddle Bag attachments to trial with the Convert Harness. So we saddled up and off we went on another adventure. They were so simple to fit to the harness, they can be slipped on and off with the flick of the extra strong velco attachments. So when you just need the harness, you have it, but when you want to quickly add the functionality of a backpack system and build the harness up, you have that as well. On our adventure I was able to carry a water bladder for hydration and I also carried my own poo bags and some first aid equipment. It gave me a real sense of purpose and the entire system was still very lightweight and comfortable.
The saddle bags come with a comfort grip handle so our owners can also carry them, or even fit them to their belts with the velco strapping. Water proof zippers and reflective piping will have you out and about in all conditions. I was very impressed with the design, quality and functionality.

The Convert Harness sizes range from XXSmall to XXLarge and the saddle bags will also be released in Small and Large sizes. You can even buy custom Velcro badges to style the system up even more. I will keep you updated with a release date and pricing as soon as it becomes available.

In the meantime, take the path less travelled….Bobby (Product Tester)

Tips & Training

Puppy Toilet Training

puppy toilet training

Bobby’s first outside wee-wee, good boy Bobby

Toilet training your puppy should be quite a simple process, as long as you can take the time to get your doggie into a good routine and have plenty of patience.

Initially, you will have to build your routine around your puppy’s habits. Puppies need to urinate immediately after waking up, so you need to be there to take your puppy straight into the yard without any delay.

Eating its meal stimulates its digestive system, and puppies normally urinate within fifteen minutes of eating, and defecate within half an hour of eating (although this might vary slightly).

Puppies have very poor bladder control, and need to urinate at least every hour or two. They can urinate spontaneously when they get excited, so take your puppy out frequently if it has been active, playing or exploring.

You may find it useful to keep a record of when your puppy eats sleeps, urinates and defecates. A simple diary list will do. Repeat cue words like ‘wee wees’ and ‘poo poos’ while the puppy is actually urinating or defecating. Use different words for each action so that you will be able to prompt the puppy later on and develop word association.

Always go with your puppy into the yard so you are there to reward and attach the cue words to the successful actions! Fortunately, puppies are creatures of habit, so as long as you introduce the yard to your puppy as its toilet area early on, you should be able to avoid most of the common pitfalls.

Common Puppy Toilet Training Mistakes
Unfortunately there are many reasons why ‘toilet training’ might not go as smoothly as it could, so make sure you do not make any of the following mistakes:

  • Over-feeding.
  • Feeding an unsuitable diet or giving a variety of foods.
  • Not feeding at regular times.
  • Feeding at the wrong times (which could cause overnight defecation).
  • Punishing the puppy for its indoor accidents (which can make it scared of toileting in front of you – even outside).
  • Feeding salty foods (e.g. stock from cubes) which makes them drink more.
  • Using ammonia based cleaning compounds (which smell similar to urine).
  • Expecting the puppy to tell you when it needs to go out; this is unrealistic, so it is better to take them out at regular intervals.
  • Leaving the back door open for the puppy to come and go as it pleases (a puppy will think that the yard is an adventure playground, rather than a toilet area. Also, what is a puppy meant to do when the weather gets cold, and it is faced with a closed back door?).
  • Leaving the puppy on its own too long, so that it is forced to go indoors (which sets a bad precedent, or even a habit of going indoors).
  • Mistakenly associating the words ‘good girl’ or ‘good boy’ when they toilet, as opposed to the specific cue words. Guess what could happen the next time you praise your dog?
  • Access to rugs or carpet (which are nice and absorbent – just like grass).
  • Laziness on your part, resulting in more wees indoors than outdoors.
  • Leaving the puppy alone in the yard, so you are not there to reward it for going outdoors… how is it meant to learn that it is more popular and advantageous going outdoors, if you are not there to show your approval?
  • Submissive or excited urination on greeting (if this occurs, take your puppy outside before you greet it and tone down your greeting so it is less exciting or overwhelming).
  • It is unfair to expect your puppy to go right through the night when it is very young.
  • Sleeping the puppy in a crate or puppy pen can help with house training but you should let it out in the yard to relieve itself during the night.

Teaching Your Puppy To Toilet On A Walk
Many owners appear disappointed that their young puppy will not toilet when out on a walk, yet relieves itself the second it gets back home. This is because the puppy has been taught to toilet only at home (hopefully in its yard), and being creatures of habit, they often wait until they have returned home before evacuating their bladder and/ or bowels.

To break this habit, you will have to get up very early one morning (when you have plenty of time), and get your puppy out on a walk before it has had its morning wee. You should not bring it home until it has been forced to go out of desperation. If however, you are unsuccessful, and your puppy has not toileted, then take it immediately into the yard on your return, or you risk it relieving itself indoors.

Effective toilet training takes time, patience, consistency and positive reinforcement. If you really apply yourself to this then your puppy should be well on their way within a few weeks of training. Woofas, Bindi (CEO)

The Perfect Doggie Holiday

[dt_gap height=”10″]

Just 95km north of Sydney you will find our favourite holiday place, Avoca Beach. This amazing little piece of paradise on the Central Coast of NSW is just perfect for doggie holidays, and you can even take your human companions with you.

The pet friendly Avoca Beach 1940’s beach house is positioned right on Avoca Lake, it is literally at your front fence. As you walk out the front gate, you can walk 5 metres to have a dip in the lake, or for the more adventurous, you can walk along the sand over to Avoca Beach which is only about 50 metres away.

All doggies are allowed off leash to the North of Avoca Beach and every early morning and late afternoon, you will find so many friendly doggies playing and having fun in sun, sand and surf. Avoca Lake, which is perfect for doggies that would rather chill out and cool off hanging in the lagoon is perfect for doggies like me. Or if you are more of a ratbag like Bobby, you may prefer surfing the waves along the beach. There is so much for us doggies to enjoy and we just love it there, there is even a large grassed sports oval right next to the lake, less than 20 metres away.

At the end of a fun filled day you can chill out on the front lawn of the beach house under the magnificent pine trees soaking in the atmosphere. You can enjoy a huge range of water sports right on your doorstep.

This very private and original Australian beach house sleeps a family of eight comfortably. With two double and one bunk bedroom, two living areas (one with point blank water views) and huge fenced lawns making it ideal for the whole family and safe and secure for us doggies.

There is no need for the car everything is within walking distance, there is a variety of restaurants and cafes, and some are even pet friendly. We spend each morning enjoying doggie cappuccinos at our favourite cafe. There is a post office, newsagent, pharmacy, bakery and mini-mart. Avoca Beach also has a historic cinema, a hotel, bowling club, motel and Caravan Park. Everything our humans need for a relaxing holiday with us.

The sunrises and sunsets are just magnificent and we are always tuckered out at the end of each day.  It is a very special place for us and we hope you and your two legged friends can take you there one day. You will have a magical time and who knows we might even be there to hang out with you. If you are looking to stay you can book the Avoca Beach House at www.stayz.com.au “Avoca’s 1940’s Beach House”, otherwise spend the day there with plenty of park space and easy beach access. About Us

In The Beginning

[dt_gap height=”20″]

December 1, 2012 was an exciting day for Bobby and I as we officially launch our Doggie Blog. So we thought we would kick off our blog by telling you how it all started. The Leura Doggie Store for VIP’s was founded in 2010 in the picturesque village of Leura.

I am told that I (Bindi the Golden Retriever entrepreneur) am the inspiration behind the concept. Each day I inspire my owners (although I really own them) to live in the moment, enjoy the now for we do not know what tomorrow brings. I have taught them the meaning of unconditional love, loyalty and the key to happiness.

Being a bit of a big boofy princess, I have always been on the lookout both here and abroad for the best quality doggie brands and products and tested them all. It’s true you know, us doggies can be very self conscious and we do feel a sense of empowerment and security when we are sporting a great looking premium quality product. I could never find anywhere that specialised in only the best quality doggie products, so I decided to make it happen and put my paws to work.

The opening of the Leura Doggie Store was scary and exciting all at the same time, it was a risk, but luckily 100’s of pet owners and their doggies visited in the first few days. We started small, only stocking 6 of the world’ s premium brands throughout 2010 as we continued to research and test products. Today we stock over 40 of the world’s best brands and are very excited about expanding this collection throughout 2013.

We cater for all types of doggies, from small to large breeds. Whether you are a diva dog or an adventure dog, we have you covered. You can dress it up with Waifs & Strays, Paul Frank and Puppia, or get set for life’s adventures with performance dog gear from EzyDog and Ruffwear.

The store now has 5 rooms filled with stock as well as a doggie photographic studio. The Main room full of toys, treats, bowls and our most popular collars, leads and harnesses. The Coat Room is filled with winter coats, doggie pyjamas, raincoats and designer doggie t-shirts. The bedroom has the most comfortable and stylish dog beds in the country and the VIP Room is where we showcase the ultimate in doggie brands exclusive to the Leura Doggie Store. We also have a balcony where humans can relax while the doggies are shopping.

In September 2011, I was joined by my little earth angel and best friend Mr Bobby. I have appointed Bobby as 2IC (second in charge). He is responsible for testing our more performance based brands on the market as well as exclusive products like BlueBlood and Waif & Strays. He also spends time as shop security, door greeter and shoplifter when I am not supervising. At the beginning of this year we also launched our business online, creating a premium doggie department store that now stocks over 1,500 of the world’s best doggie products. The website is continually evolving and expanding, providing doggies worldwide with the opportunity to find premium products all from the one store.

We have exciting projects planned for 2013 which will include even more fun doggie competitions on our facebook and some anticipated new arrivals. When we are not working hard in our store we enjoy spending time hanging out together. We love going on doggie adventures to the beach and our favourite dog park as well as patrolling the local streets. My favourite hobby is telling everyone what to do and Bobby loves fang fights with me, sooking with mum and WWE wrestling with dad.

We have an amazing bond, soul mates from the very beginning. Bobby continues to keep me young and entertained every day. We give nothing short of pure love and friendliness to all those that cross our path. Mum says that Bobby is too friendly, always tarting around at the dog park. Our mission it to be Australia’s #1 Doggie Store for premium brands and to focus on customer service and a continual cycle of improvement and development.  We would love to see you one day in our store, all doggies and their owners are welcome. Thank you for reading our first blog post.
